Hosted by the Unit of Gastroesophageal Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital, this fellowship combines cutting-edge surgical training with access to a world-class research environment, fostering professional growth at one of Europe’s leading cancer centers.

About us 

As a tertiary high-volume center for gastroesophageal surgery at Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Centre, we offer the opportunity to further specialise in the field of gastroesophageal surgery. The close integration between the Karolinska University Hospital and Sweden’s largest medical university and research institute, the Karolinska Institutet, also grant us a unique research environment.

The fellowship is designed for 24 months starting 1 Januari 2026.

Clinical training 

Clinical training is within the Gastroesophageal team and consist mainly of structured education in surgical techniques, during both open, minimally invasive and robot assisted gastroesophageal procedures. Depending on language skills, we also offer active participation at patient rounds, outpatient clinic and multidisciplinary conferences.

Research

Fellows will participate in our research group with the aim to submit at least one manuscript for publication during the fellowship, preferably in a bi-institutional setting together with the fellow’s home institution. For applicants already holding a PhD, there is a possibility to obtain a postdoctoral fellowship diploma from Karolinska Institutet. The fellow will also take part in lectures, seminars, journal clubs and research conferences. 

Eligibility

Applicants are expected to:

  • be graduates of a recognized medical school
  • have completed a general surgery residency and be committed to a future academic career in the field of gastroesophageal surgery
  • be an expert on minimally invasive and robot assisted gastroesophageal surgery
  • applicants need to be proficient in both written and spoken English (at least grade B2 according to CEFR).
  • Basic knowledge of Swedish is desirable but not required.
